Vandy students are first to hear anti-drinking, anti-drug message
Written by: Jon Malavolti
About 700 students packed into Vandercook Lake High School to hear rock group Linkin Park and actress Hilary Duff talk about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.
The student bodies of Vandercook Lake Middle School and Vandercook Lake High School were the first in Jackson County to watch "Backstage Pass," a national multimedia assembly program from Mothers Against Drunk Driving featuring young celebrities.
"Kids can relate to them," said Mary Ann Bair, a program director with Michigan MADD. "If we could get through to one kid in 100, that's success."
The film, shown on three giant screens, features interviews in which the celebrities downplay the alcohol- and drug-fueled backstages.
Narrators take teens through the on-stage hype and backstage realities, encouraging them to develop their own personalities based on health and safety, not popularity.
"Yeah, it kind of hit home," eighth-grader Patrick Furlong said of getting the information from Linkin Park, a band he likes.
The film also has graphic scenes from a fatal alcohol-related car accident involving teens. Furlong's sister, Cindy, an 11th-grader, said the scenes showing one of the teens in the hospital and her father at the scene of the accident affected her classmates.
"There were a lot of gasps," she said.
The siblings agreed the film influenced them not to drink and drive.
Bev Ward of Jackson County MADD said they were showing the film at a key time with spring break, prom and graduation looming.
"We expect them to make wise decisions about drinking," Ward said. "And now they've got a lot of opportunities to put that into practice."
DaimlerChrysler and its Road Ready Teens program sponsor "Backstage Pass." For more information, call (800) GET-MADD or visit www.schoolassembly.org.
