"R. Kelly, Linkin Park, Mariah Songs Banned From 'American Idol' Auditions


The third season of American Idol kicked off this week on FOX with the final auditions show airing Wednesday (January 21) at 8 p.m. ET. The three opening shows take a behind-the-scenes look at the good, the bad, and the really, really bad from auditions in New York, Atlanta and Houston. The season premiere of American Idol on Monday (January 19) attracted an estimated 28 million viewers.


According to information from the hit show obtained by LAUNCH, several singers and songs were banned from being performed at this year's auditions, including Sarah McLachlan's "Angel," Etta James' "At Last," Elton John's "Candle In The Wind," and the ever-popular "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys. You also won't hear anything by Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Mariah Carey, No Doubt, R. Kelly, Tom Petty, Korn, Linkin Park, Carly Simon, or John Mellencamp during the audition process.


The American Idol memo also discourages "most alternative rock bands" to perform during the audition."

I know that there is not one single person who can make an LP song sound good. Not even the greatest singer or even another rock star. It's great that they banned it but not fair. But that's why they called it 'pop idol' and not 'rock idol' like what's his name said. I think we should stop bringing new artists into the business 'cuz it's not big enough for f*ck ups!

...performing Linkin Park songs won't prove how good you sing. Linkin Park is just rap and rock. Anyone can rap and anyone can scream. If they didn't ban Linkin Park songs, then anyone can just sing a song like Papercut and they'll be a good singer. Korn music...I don't see how singing Korn songs can show people that you're a good singer and you can project your voice. Although I would like to see other people try to sing LP and Korn songs. But still... I've seen this news like last year. It's either the same setting, or it was planned very long ago.

yeah but papercut barely has singing, just the bridge has. but you can't do most lp songs, you can't be mike and chester at the same time. also, it's a singing contest, so that's probly one of the reasons lp songs have been banned. they have rap.

American Idol was a very commercial show.
In our Polish Idol rock and metal music was treaten like pop, maybe even better, because jurors liked heavier music (not all). Second edition of our Idol even won metal-worker.
